Magic Mushrooms! No comments yet

This is not what you think!

In a recent article over at the BBC Health pages the humble Cordyceps mushroom has been getting some great press coverage for its potential use in the battle against cancer.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you that mushrooms are the answer to all our cancer prayers, but there does seem to be more and more evidence being reported about the great health giving benefits of these great fungi.

Mushroom Complex is one of the products I take myself on a daily basis, and I heartily recommend it to keep yourself fit and healthy on these cold dark days. A great combination of four mushroom varieties, all high in polysaccharides and immunomodulators, which stimulate the immune system, protect the liver and kidneys, protect the prostate, reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems and promote general wellbeing and vitality.

Santa(s) Helps Children in The Local Area! 1 comment

On Sunday the 6th December 2009, 235 Santas ran along Eastbourne seafront to help raise money for great charities, The Myasthenia Gravis Association and Heart Radio’s Have a Heart campaign!

The run was fantastic fun with a really great atmosphere from both the runners and the general public all along the route. An amazing £14,000 was raised for the two charities and a great time was had by all!

To find out how the money is being spent, please spend some time looking at the charities websites and maybe even find out how you can get involved!

So why am I telling you this? Well, we were there! One of the runners on this bright sunny day was Bio Nutter Simon! In total he managed to raise around £165 for the Have A Heart Charity! If you think this is a worthwhile cause – or indeed are just impressed he managed to run 3 miles without keeling over – his donation page is still open, and I know he would be grateful for any further donations to these great causes!

Below are just a few photo’s taken on the day:

Ready for the off!

Ready for the off!

Why a hill to start?

Why a hill to start?

Nearly there now!

Nearly there now!

Have a great Christmas everyone and a Healthy New Year!!!

Let the Kids Get Dirty and Allergy Free! No comments yet

A US team of scientists have decided that children should be allowed to get dirty!

Normal bacteria living on the skin triggers a pathway that helps prevent inflammation when we get hurt. These bugs inhibit an over-active immune system that can cause cuts and grazes to swell.

The experts said that their findings provided an explanation for the ‘hygiene hypothesis’, which states that exposure to germs during early childhood primes the immune system against allergies.

Many people believe that our obsession with over-cleanliness is to blame for our recent boom in allergy development!

A spokeswoman for Allergy UK said ‘rates of allergy have tripled in the UK in the last decade. One in three people now has some kind of allergy!’

Head of the research Professor Richard Gallo said ‘The exciting implication of the work is that it provides a molecular basis to understand the hygiene hypothesis and has uncovered elements of the wound repairing response that were previously unknown.’

The lobby group Parents Outloud said the work offered scientific support for its campaign to stop children being mollycoddled and over-sanitised.

Now, we’re not saying don’t clean, as bacteria are one of the major causes of infection and food poisoning, but just don’t be obsessive about it! Don’t be scared by the TV adverts telling you if you don’t wipe everything up immediately you’ll be ill! Just take a reasonable grounded approach to life, kids get dirty, they enjoy it. I know mine do!

If you want to stay health and boost the immune system, use nutrients, either from food or supplements; they work because your body knows what to do with them!

58% Reduction in Diabetes Risk Study! No comments yet

***NEWSFLASH***
Careful eating and regular exercise can stave off diabetes! Well, we all knew that didn’t we? But, did you know it could be by as much as 58%?

In a recent large study (3,000 people), the US-based Diabetes Prevention Program Research Group have shown that a diet aimed at achieving a 7% weight loss, combined with half-an-hour of exercise five days a week, reduced the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 58%.

According to the Lancet the dieters reaped the most benefit from the study, even compared to the group on the diabetes drug ‘Metaformin’, which has been used to treat diabetics since the 1950’s.

‘There seems to be no short cut, and a persistent and prolonged intensive lifestyle intervention seems to be the most effective answer’ said Dr Misra of the Lancet.

Type 2 diabetes usually appears in people over the age of 40; however increasing numbers of children – some as young s seven – are now being diagnosed.

So, this exercise lark, I can’t do that five days a week! Well you’ll be happy to know it doesn’t have to be full-on treadmill stuff, just enough to make you slightly breathless, and increase your heart rate. Go for a walk, play with the kids (that’ll help them too!), take the stairs, just do something. It all helps!

There are also supplements that can help control blood sugar levels, chromium being the best and most widely available.

Don’t sit there worrying about diabetes, get up and move so you don’t have to!
